Masses in the Abdomen

Dear Dr. King,

Acupoint Fushe SP13 has the indication for masses in the abdomen. As we know that Abdominal Masses include various forms and types. Does this Acupoint be applied for those items as listed below?

1. Abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause a pulsating mass around the navel.

2. Bladder distention (urinary bladder over-filled with fluid) can cause a firm mass in the center of the lower abdomen above the pelvic bones, and in extreme cases can extend as far up as the navel.

3. Cholecystitis can cause a very tender mass that is felt below the liver in the right-upper quadrant (occasionally).

4. Colon cancer can cause a mass almost anywhere in the abdomen.

5. Crohn's disease or bowel obstruction can cause multiple tender, sausage-shaped masses anywhere in the abdomen.

5. Diverticulitis can cause a mass that is usually located in the left-lower quadrant.

6. Gallbladder tumor can cause a moderately tender, irregularly shaped right-upper quadrant mass.

7. Hydronephrosis (fluid-filled kidney) can cause a smooth, spongy-feeling mass in one or both sides or toward the back (flank area).

8. Kidney cancer can sometimes cause a mass in the abdomen.

9. Liver cancer can cause a firm, lumpy mass in the right upper quadrant.

10. Liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) can cause a firm, irregular mass below the right rib cage (right costal margin), or on the left side in the stomach area (epigastric).

11. Neuroblastoma, a malignant tumor often found in the lower abdomen, that primarily occurs in children and infants.

12. Ovarian cyst can cause a smooth, rounded, rubbery mass above the pelvis in the lower abdomen.

13. Pancreatic abscess can cause a mass in the upper abdomen in the epigastric area.

14. Pancreatic pseudocyst can cause a lumpy mass in the upper abdomen in the epigastric area.

15. Renal cell carcinoma can cause a smooth, firm, nontender mass near the kidney (usually only affects one kidney).

16. Spleen enlargement (splenomegaly) -- the edge of an enlarged spleen may sometimes be felt in the left-upper quadrant.

17. Stomach cancer can cause a mass in the left-upper abdomen in the stomach area (epigastric) if the cancer is large.

18. Uterine leiomyoma (fibroids) can cause a round, lumpy mass above the pelvis in the lower abdomen (occasionally can be felt if the fibroids are large).

19. Volvulus can cause a mass anywhere in the abdomen.

20. Ureteropelvic junction obstruction can cause a mass in the lower abdomen.

Perhaps, Fushe SP13 has its own specific terms of reference. If so, what are these symptoms? May your comments be sought, please.

Dear Chenkc,
Usually what will you do for the disorders you have mentioned above?
Will you do acupuncture for them or will you send them to the specialists?
Or what do you think the ancient Chinese acupuncture physicians could do for these disorders? Do you think they could make good diagnosis and differentiated them one from another?
I presume you will give a denying answer. For sure they couldn't. So, that's why in the indications of Fushe (SP 13), it's only roughly mentioning the masses in the abdomen.
In fact, at the moment, in China, majority of patients with the diseases as you mentioned above will go to see the specialists in departments of the relevant specialties.
So, acupuncture is seldom used to treat these disorders.
That's the reality!

I wished somebody can finds some acupoints that can work magically one day.

Yes, that's right! That would be the greatest thing if one could cure all the cancers!

However COULD be used to treat cancers!!!

E.g., the breast cancer!

I used to meet Prof. Guo, who used to live in Canada, but might have moved to U.S now, has got good experience in treating breast cancer. He didn't tell me how, but personally I think I've got a rough idea.

So, if some patients suffering from breast cancer ask me to give a treatment to them, I think I could make a successful cure.

But in China patients never go to see the acupuncture physicians for cancers.
