Dear Dr. King,

In the text, it states that this acupoint could apply for the treatment of urticaria, febrile diseases and vertigo and many others. It continues to state that with the combination with other acupoints e.g.

(1) Dazhui DU14 and Fengchi GB20 to treat fever.
(2) Dazhui DU14 and Xuehai (ST10?) to treat urticaria
(3) Zusanli ST36 and Renying ST9 to treat vertigo.

My question is this: What is the difference, if all the symptoms are treated with the Quchi alone? If the effect is the same, why such a combination is necessary?

Xueghai (ST10) as shown in the text could be an error. Should it be SP10?

Your advice, please.

Dear Chenkc,
Yes, Quchi (LI 11) can be used to treat various diseases, especially the disorders of heat and excess nature.
To do acupuncture or traditional Chinese mediciine, usually a prescription is needed, which would contain not only one point, or one herb, but several ones in combination. I think it's nearly the same in western medicine.
So, for sure this point is good to deal with alone the disorders mentioned by you, but the combination with the others would enhance the therapeutic effect.

You are right, Xuehai should be SP 10, that's the misprinting.

Sorry to talk to you a bit too late!
I think you can use the points to treat the hand-foot-mouth disease of young children but more local points should be combined and herbs might also be used.
Anyway, to treat diseases with traditional Chinese medicine, it is very essential to grasp the skill of the differential diagnosis of syndromes, meaning, to treat each disease you should have an idea what a syndrome it is, so you can prescribe medicaments or acupuncture points accordingly.
So, we have to make sure which syndrome the child suffers from.

Thank you.

For the use of acupuncture on young children, would there be different type or size of the needles for this purpose? How about the insertion of the needles in respect of the dept? Do we follow the specific dept as specified for each acupoint? Your comments, please.

Yes, when we do acupuncture for young children, we do use smaller needles, or thinner ones if it's possible.

And for sure the depth is different, that's the basic principle to do acupuncture. To treat those with big body build, we should do deeper while to treat those with smaller build, we should do shallower.
