thick or thin nature or flavour of a herb

Dear Tutor David DU
I am very satisfied reading course E about herbology .. indeed your celebrated Chinese forefathers made great achievements by herbals
As far as I can understand I have the opinion that a good herbalist is superior than a pharmacist on Chinese medicine .
I have to make some questions…
I have read from SU WEN that “thick flavour is yin ,thin flavour is yang within
Yin, thick energy is yang , thin energy is yin within yang “
…and an ancient Chinese herbalist remarked “thin flavour will push upward, thick
Flavour will sink , thin energy will push downward ,thick energy will float “
I recognize that the word “energy “ is about the four natures of the herbs .
Please let me know what causes determine the “thickness or thinness of a herb ?
Or what is thick or thin nature or flavour of a herb ?
Are there any other methods of treatment except counteracting methods of four natures of the
Herbs (just as a cold disease is treated by hot herbs) ?
Par example if a patient has diarrhea due to damp heat can we induce further diarrhea in order to clear
Up damp heat in the body ? this act seems to me identical with the nature of the disease under treatment !!
After all I am ready to participate on the final exam of course E (herbology)..

As to your questions, I asked Tutor, and he transferred his answer to you so I paste it herein.

"First of all, I think the energy therein refers to the word "Qi" in Chinese origin. What is Qi? It could for sure be understood as the Four Natures of the herbs, but anything more? Maybe.

Those with thick flavors for sure are the ones such as Renshen, Danggui, Huanglian, etc, while those with thin flavors are those such as Fuling, Zhuling, Sangbaipi, etc.

There are eight therapeutic methods in traditional Chinese medicine, warming, clearing, elimintating, tonifying, etc.

So, what you mentioned the damp-heat leading to diarrhea should be treated with clearing method.You have got a very correct understanding."

i think thick or thin energy (nature) or flavour of herbs is an oldest records arrragement of chinese herbalists in the past.. many things about it have been lost and please if you want to give me more defails on this..
