What do you know about herbal microdosage?

Supposedly it's great because one uses very low amounts of herbs to get the same medicinal effect; or even better since you might avoid toxic side effects some herbs might have without using, for example, an antitoxic herb in the formula.

I'm not sure about the last statement, but I'm not sure about anything as far as microdosages go!

To tell the truth, in China, the herbs are never used in a microdosage except some toxic and aneathesizing herbs.
I think this is a homeoepathy idea, not really a idea of traditional Chinese medicine.
In fact, in ancient time in China, even a greater dosage was used.
In majority of herbs, the toxins have been eliminated through various preparing ways and more and more preparing ways and methods have been innovated, so the herbal medicine has become safer and safer. but the dosage was also getting a bit smaller.
However, even the smaller dosage is far more from the extent of the microdosage.
Only small number of herbs, like Genwa, Aconite root, are used in small dosage.

If mirodosage is used, how would we know if the patient's recovery might have been independent of the herb, or in some cases, be psychological in effect?

I couldn't see the logic behind herbal microdosages, except of course using smaller dosages for the more toxic herbs, as you explained. I'm glad I asked.

I think some of the people who are researching chinese herbal microdosages in my country [i:6af1c405ed]are[/i:6af1c405ed] homeopaths, so maybe it [i:6af1c405ed]is[/i:6af1c405ed] a homeopathic idea.

When I saw your post I started thinking more about the subject (feel free to correct me in my thinking):

I can see how using acupuncture microsystems work, since acupuncture tends to be more about energy manipulation, and less about the size of the needles or the area worked on.

But since herbal medicine tends to be more about replenishing matter, I would think herbal microdosages would be contrary to its nature. So, it would be like eating a poppy seed, a piece of bread, and a mouthful of ground beef, instead of eating a hamburger.

And pkkkoh makes an interesting point. Microdosages might simply have a placebo effect.

I agree with you, Serpent!!!
But I'm not quite sure about the mechanism of acupuncture, I mean the conventional acupuncture, say nothing of the systems of microacupuncture.
However, majority of the clinical acupuncture practitioners would think acupuncture is related with the energy flow, or using a traditional terminology, the flow of Qi, but nobody is quite sure what the Qi is, so we cannot ascertain well the mechanism of acupuncture.
I know some scientists have discovered the relationship between the acupuncture stimulation and the neurotransmitters, but I think acupuncture is far more than merely increasing the secretion of neurotransmitters, or something else the modern science has discovered.
So personally I don't think that acupuncture can be compared with the medication of Chinese herbs.
As the dosage of herbs is concerned, an idea appears to me that in western medicine, the dosage should also be sufficient to reach a certain blood concentration which serves to acquire the therapeutic effect, thus should be maintained with more medication. According to my personal experience, the dosage of the herbal medication at the moment in China is not really too much, but is sufficient in reality, so the herbal medication should be taken 3 or 4 times a daily, not only twice a day. It is apparent that the microdosage of Chinese herbs is not really realistic. Anyway, I think so.
