Treatment of Meniere's Disease with Chinese Herbal Medicine

Preliminary Study on Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture in Treatment of Meniere's Disease

  Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture in treatment of 36 cases of Miniere's disease based on the treatment principle of resolving phlegm.

Methods: Acupuncture therapy was applied for acute attack. Selection of points: Fenglong (ST 40), Neiguan (PC6), Zhongwan (CV12, bilateral sides); Neiting (ST 44) was added for phlegm-heat syndrome. A filiform needle was used to puncture Fenglong (ST 40) l.5cun in depth. When there was the arrival of qi, the needling sensation was Promoted running upward, the needle was manipulated by quick lifting, thrusting and rotating, and removed with enlarged hole by shaking the needle. A filiform needle was taken to puncture Zhongwan (CV12) 2cun in depth. Even manipulation was performed; Neiguan (PV6) was punctured 1cun in death with tip of the needle against the running course of the meridian. The needling sensation was running upward. A filiform needle was used to puncture. Neiting (ST44) in case the turbid phlegm had been transformed into heat, and manipulated by rapid twirling and rotation, and removed slowly. All the above-mentioned needles were retained for 0.5 hour, during the retention, the needles were manipulated twice. When the symptoms were alleviated, modified Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction was prescribed to the patient with retention of phlegm-damp in the middle-jiao syndrome. Ingredients: Rhizoma Pinelliaeb 12g, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae 10g, Poria 12g, Radix Glycyrrhizae 10g, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae 12g, Rhizoma Gastrodiae 8g, Ochra Haematitum 15g and Semen Amomi Cardamomi 10g. Scallion stalk 10g and Rhizoma Acori Graminei 10g were added in case of tinnitus; Modified Huanglian Wendan Decoction (Coptis Decoction for warming up the Gall Bladder) was used for a phlegm transformed into heat syndrome. Ingredients: Prepared Rhizoma Pinelliae 12g, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae 10g, Poria 10g, Fructus Auramii Immaturus 10g, Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam 8g, Prepared Rhizoma Cyperi 10g, Rhizoma Coptidis 6g. Results: Of the 36 cases, 24 cases had no more relapse, 12 cases had reduced frequency of attack. The effective rate was 100%, curative rate 66.6%.

Conclusion: Chinese herbal medicine based on the principle of resolving phlegm (including acupuncture) is of remarkable therapeutic effect in treating Meniere's disease. Acupuncture is applied to treat the acute attack of Meniere's disease with rapid and stronger therapeutic effects.
