Jiao Gu Lan, is also called Qi Ye Dan in Chinese and the English name is Gynostemma Pentaphyllum. There are altogether 13 in its family. It grows in China, but also in other countries such as Japan, Korea, India, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, etc. It is an anti-aging longevity herb. It reduces fatigue, improves digestion, strengthens the mind, improves sex functions, calms the nerves, eases pain, and helps in weight control.

It is often made into tea, so it is also known as "The Chinese Immortality Herb" Or, some people call it the 5-leaf Ginseng or Poor man's Ginseng, or even more, as southern ginseng, miracle grass, fairy herb, gospel herb, etc.

In t erms of modern medicine, the whole plant is a tonic herb that improves the circulation, stimulates liver function, strengthens the immune and nervous systems, and reduces blood sugar and cholesterol levels. It also has sedative effects, relieving spasms and lowering the blood pressure. It is used internally in the treatment of nervous tension and exhaustion, peptic ulcer, asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. It was rated among the ten most important tonic herbs at a conference on traditional medicines in Beijing in 1991

In fact, this material was not used much in old time, so it was not taken into the textbooks so Medboo doesn't take it either.

Here is some more info for you on Jiao gu Lan (Gynostemma) . From a western perspective it has anti -inflamatory properties which counteract the release of endothelin, a hormone that causes constriction and shut down . Additionaly and this is a big one , it stimulates the production of Nitric Oxide . This is a small reactive molecule and is critical to a wide range of biological activities from digestion to regulating blood pressure . So it enables adequate circulation ( good for blood stagnation ) through tissues and blood vessels so it relaxes the blood vessels to allow better circulation. You can see here how it would relieve heat and pain caused by blood stagnation and improve digestion . It is a very good Herb that I think deserves more coverage in Chinese Herbal studies since it is now widly used . I believe the Materia Medica of chen describes it but Bensky allso left it out .
