International Basic Training Program for
Acupotomology

Acupotomology is an initiative medical technology integrating the advantages of both acupuncture needle and surgical scalpel that represents a critical development in Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion history. Other than all the diseases that could be treated by acupuncture, needle scalpel makes it possible for practitioners in Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology to perform closed procedures to treat disease instead of open procedures including decollement and lysis, which greatly enhances the efficacy for such diseases as hyperostosis and chronic soft tissue injury. While the Needle-scalpel medicine extends the indications of needle scalpel therapy to many fields like internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, five sense organ disorders and dermatology, etc, it brings forward a full set of theories and concepts that address the etiological factors and pathogenesis of many common and complicated diseases as well as the mechanism of needle scalpel therapy, all of which could withstand the test of time.

Soon after its emergence, the needle-scalpel therapy is accepted by medical authorities and experts and wins their appreciation, mainly due to its potent effectiveness in clinical practice. A public hearing to identify the efficacy of needle scalpel was co-held by national Ministry of Health and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine on Sep. 6, 2003, which was attended by 29 experts from 27 grade A class 3 hospitals from around the country. A consensus was made following the results of assessment and evaluation that the highly effective needle scalpel therapy is innovative in its applied instrument and initiative in its supporting theory and its safety is secured if followed by standard operation procedure, thereof a new science--- Acupotomology is specifically established on this basis. In response to that, Needle Scalpel Medicine (two volumes, published by Chinese Publishing House of TCM) is introduced to the teaching material series of TCM institutes of higher learning in March 2004, serving as the medical textbook of Needle Scalpel Medicine teaching for more than a dozen TCM colleges. Moreover, the book is issued domestically and internationally. With the mutual efforts of both Zhu Hanzhang, founder of the needle scalpel medicine, and his colleagues in this area, the effect of promotion and popularization is obvious: nearly one hundred thousand practitioners have received formal training, thirty thousand of which owns professor title and five thousand are overseas physicians, more than that, needle scalpel therapy centers are established in 48 countries and regions.

Professor Zhu Hanzhang, who invented needle scalpel medicine in 1987, is the founder and leader of this treatment. He owns several patent technologies and has won the gold medal of Eureka in the 37th world exposition, the1986 gold award of Huatuo and the 2nd Rank Award of National Scientific & Technological Achievement in 2002. Among them, the gold award of Huatuo is the highest award in Chinese medical community. Other than the director of needle scalpel training center of Beijing University of TCM, Professor Zhu enjoys many titles such as executive board member of National TCM Association, president of Acupotomology Branch of International TCM Association, visiting professor of Chinese Peking Union Medical College, member of the American Academy Experts in Traumatic Stress, chairman of Emergency Committee of American Academy of Sciences, senior academic consultant of Dongguk University of Korea, principal of 973 Needle Scalpel Project of Chinese Major Basic Medical Theory Researching Topic, president of Beijing Hanzhang Needle Scalpel Institute. Due to his outstanding contribution, a newly found asteroid of CanisMinor was named after his name---Zhu Hanzhang by the International Star Registry in January 2001, making him the first Chinese medical professional whose name is adopted by the organization to name a star.

Needle scalpel medicine can deal with many intractable diseases. It is scarless and minimally invasive, showing satisfactory and rapid efficacy for the following diseases: soft wounds(pain in neck, shoulders, low back and legs, etc.), hyperosteogeny(bony spur in cervical and lumbar vertebrae and knee joints), deformities of limbs and joints(cyrtosis, scoliosis, pediatric bowleg), femoral head aseptic necrosis, prolapse of cervical and lumbar intervertebral disc, non-bony lumbar spinal stenosis, sciatica, paralysis of lower extremities caused by lumbar spondylolisthesis, all types of joint damage, disorders caused by non-infective inflammation and difficult medical disorders caused by malfunction of spinal column and minor joints(disorders relating to the heart, lungs, liver and gallbladder, etc.). The easy and cheap access to mastery, operation and effectiveness of needle scalpel therapy makes it practical for physicians serving for basic rural health to establish specialty clinics focusing on pain in the neck, shoulders, lumbar and legs or hyperosteogeny, helping them to achieve considerable therapeutic and economic benefits.

The needle scalpel therapy is greatly and extensively appreciated both by the medical practitioners and patients thanks to its advantages characterized by easiness, convenience, effectiveness and economy. A rather low investment is enough to perform the procedure as a small needle scalpel and routine skin disinfection are all it requires. Though the procedure is simple, it provides quick efficacy and high safety without resulting in any complication or sequelae. The patients can benefit from spending less as most of the above mentioned diseases could be cured by one or two trials.

1. Training contents: Help the trainees to master the needle scalpel therapy in the treatment of the following disease: injury of ligamentum nuchae, injury of levator scapulae, injury of splenius capitis, cervical spondylosis(atlantooccipital fascia contracture), Subdeltoid bursitis, injury of supraspinatus muscle, injury of infraspinatus muscle, injury of rhomboid muscle, scapulohumeral periarthritis, radiohumeral epicondylitis(tennis elbow), inflammation of condylus medialis humeri, carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis stenosans of musculorum flexorum, strain of inferior segment musculus sacrospinalis, transverse process syndrome of the third lumbar vertebrae, injury of gluteus medius, piriformis syndrome, injury of subpatellar fat pad, malacosis of patella, medial collateral ligament of knee joints and bony spur of calcaneus, etc. Through the combination of class learning of theory and clinical practice, we endeavour to make every individual trainee to master the operating techniques of needle scalpel so that you can apply them on clinical practice independently.
2. Training dates: 2006.8.25—2006.8.4
3. Eligibility: All medical practitioners in the field of internal medicine, pain-treating, soft injury, anaesthetics, physical therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, surgery, acupuncture and moxibustion, osteopathy of TCM, rehabilitation and Chinese traditional manipulation are encouraged to attend this program, and those who runs a private clinic and those who are interested scalpel medicine are also welcomed. This stage of program is in English.
4. Arrangement of courses: Seven days will be allocated for learning basic theories of the needle scalpel medicine, during which the indications, contraindications, basic operations, acupuncture syncope and anesthesia, etc. will be emphasized, followed by lectures addressing the basic application of needle scalpel on the common and complicated diseases affecting a wide variety of body sites including the neck, shoulders, back, elbow, wrist, hands, waist, buttocks, knees, ankles and feet. Two days are allocated for anatomy of needle scalpel medicine and one day for clinical demonstration. There are 60 classes in all.
5. Instructors: Zhu Hanzhang and other famous physicians in needle scalpel medicine will give the classes and will offer their expertise and all they know to everyone. The teaching styles consisting of lectures and demonstrations will help the trainees to witness and experience the marvelous efficacy of needle scalpel therapy. We will invite those physicians who have made achievements in this field to communicate with us, sharing their successful experience and unique insights. The instructors will answer all the questions raised by the trainees and guide them for further exploration and research in this field.
6. Teaching modes: There are such teaching modes as lecture on theories, demonstration skeleton, differential diagnosis by X-ray of typical cases, mimic clinical interview, internship, complete demonstrative operations and clinical demonstrations.
7. Certificate and credits: Certificate of Completion marked with the official steel seal of Beijing College of Acupuncture & TCM will be issued by the Training School of Beijing Hanzhang Needle Scalpel Research Institute along with credits of CME(typeⅠ). Those eligible will be recommended to enroll the International Needle Scalpel Committee. All the trainees may enjoy life-long subsequent services.
8. Tuition: US$1998 Includes fees for the lectures, teaching materials and demonstrations.

10. Registration: Registration is appointed on July. 24, 2006. Please submit the following materials on registration: a copy of your Technical Title Certificate or diploma, a copy of your passport, two 2-inch photos(bareheaded), personal resume and your professional experience summary.
11. Accommodations: We will arrange them for you at your expense.
12. Notes: Please take your own white coat, hat and mask; otherwise you should purchase them at the registration office.
When the class is over, you can choose to join the specific tours on your own expense.
13. Others: Every student will be provided with a delicate autograph album of completion and teaching materials. Medical equipments and materials including needle scalpels are also provided at a favorable price.
