Title: Common Cold

In the Common Cold section of Course D, applying acupuncture to 373 patients suffering form common cold has been described (as published in the [i:a7972d357c]Journal of Acupuncture[/i:a7972d357c] 1965; 1) under Reference Materials. It is said that the points used were Dazhui (DU 14), Hegu (LI 4) and Zusanli (ST 36).

However, it seems that in the [b:a7972d357c]original study[/b:a7972d357c] the three points (DU 14, LI 4, ST 36) were only used for the patients whose body temperature exceeded 38 degrees Celsius, while for those having their temperature below 38 degrees Celsius only Dazhui (DU 14) and Hegu (LI 4) were used ([i:a7972d357c]according to the book of Dr. Tian Conghuo, 1986[/i:a7972d357c]).

Cold you please explain whether there was any particular reason [b:a7972d357c]not to needle Zusanli (ST 36)[/b:a7972d357c] in those patients whose temperature reaction was not very strong?

Thank you.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Dear Sergiy,

I'm not quite clear about what the author thought of.

But personally I think the use of ST 36 is to reduce the heat pathogens from Yangming, for the point is the He-Sea point of the meridian.

So, if the temperature is too high, the point is needled to reduce the heat from the Foot Yangming as well.

Hope it sounds reasonable and it's agreeable to the authors' thought.

Bye!

D. K.
