Tendency of Disease Movement

The text (Chapter1) indicates that diarrhea is a downward movement and should be treated with herbs having lifting effect. Does the downward movement only apply for discharge through orifices ? Is frequent urination or noctural emission also a downward movement ? Can they be classified as outward movement (moving out from inside the body) ?

That's only one case for treating diarrhea!
To treat diarrhea there could be many other ways, for example, we can eliminate the damp-heat which is considered as one of the most common caustive factor for the diarrhea.
The downward movement is the contrast to the upward one, while the outward one is compared to the inward one.
So the sweating is the outward movement; and the diarrhea is indeed the downward movement.
To treat the chronic diarrhea, we do use the herbs with the lifting effect, but for the acute ones, it's more important to eliminate the damp-heat, or in another word, to deal the inflammation or the damage of the large intestine in terms of western medicine.
So downward movement is not classified to the outward movement, they are different as I stated above.

Thanks for your answer, but my real question is whether "frequent urination" is by definition a downward movement or an outward movement in Tradiditional Chinese Medicine?

Dear Nam,
The downward movement is the movement toward the lower part of the body, so it's not really the outward movement, as I have described clearly the latter. So is the movement of food from stomach to the intestines. While the frequent urination or nocturnal emission is indeed the downward movement but they are considered abnormal.
