For sure we cannot!!!
Ear acupuncture has only been about 50 years, but the body acupuncture has been about five thousand years.
Body acupuncture could be good for acupuncture anaesthesia for such operations as intracranial tumor, pneumonectomy, cesarean section, etc.
Can ear acupuncture be so good?
Body acupuncture can be effective for treating more than 100 kinds diseases, could ear body acupuncture do that?

Dear Tommy,
Although ear acupuncture does not form part of the Medboo TCM course, I would take the liberty of suggesting in this forum some web-based resources which I have used myself. (Even though eventually I have not found this type of therapy particularly useful, you may try it for yourself).
As far as I know, one of the main uses of ear acupuncture at present is the [i:9a0a8e1a1e]NADA[/i:9a0a8e1a1e] (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association www.acudetox.com ) protocol to treat chemical dependency (drug addiction, alcoholism, and a variety of mental disorders). They have a 70 hours comprehensive certification course with [i:9a0a8e1a1e]thousands and thousands[/i:9a0a8e1a1e] of practitioners trained worldwide, but the ear acupuncture technique itself is [i:9a0a8e1a1e]so simple[/i:9a0a8e1a1e] that you can actually learn it in a few minutes. It has been described, among others, in the article [i:9a0a8e1a1e]The Ease of Treating Addictions with Acupuncture[/i:9a0a8e1a1e] by Dr. John Amaro http://www.chiroweb.com/archives/10/18/14.html and in the article ([i:9a0a8e1a1e]in Spanish[/i:9a0a8e1a1e]) [i:9a0a8e1a1e]Acupunctura y Desintoxicación (segunda parte)[/i:9a0a8e1a1e] by Humberto Brocca and Sandra Tovar Curi in [i:9a0a8e1a1e]LiberAddictus[/i:9a0a8e1a1e] (PDF, 19 kb) http://www.liberaddictus.org/Pdf/0411-34.pdf .
The rest of the links follows. [i:9a0a8e1a1e]I would appreciate it if you could also post or send me the links you may have in relation with the questions asked in my other posts in this forum[/i:9a0a8e1a1e].

My post in answering Tommy was probably not quite clear!
I meant ear acupuncture [b:322c5f0b24]cannot[/b:322c5f0b24] replace body acupuncture, [b:322c5f0b24]I didn't say ear acupuncture is not effective[/b:322c5f0b24]
For sure ear acupuncture is also effective and useful in treating some diseases.
But body acupuncture is much more important. That's the truth.
So, I focus much more on body acupuncture myself, but no objections to the use of ear acupuncture.

Hi, Where is D.K.?
Didn't see him for a while.
I think ear acupuncture is used to treat alot of diseases but only several ones are more effective with it. Personally I prefer it for headache, insomnia, some allergic disorders, and asthma. Of course it's also good for some cases of chronic pain.
Indeed some foreign people won't accept the needling of acupuncture, so the ear acupuncture might be of good help.
I wonder why the foreigners are so different from the Chinese, they are looking strong, but they cannot tolerate such a small needle. They often say the Chinese are weak and small, or even called us the Asian sickman, but we could easily take the needles.
For sure to those who fear the needling very much we have no choice but use the acupressure on the ear points, yes of course with the vaccaria seed, which is commonly used in acupuncture clinic in China.

Hi everyone!
Just come back!
It seems Sergiy knows alot of information.
In fact in majority of cases ear acupuncture is not done with reinforcing and reducing techniques. Only in case the ear points are needled and connected with electric stimulation.
Otherwise you don't have to think of the reinforcing and reducing techniques.
As a matter of fact, personally I still think the reinforcing and reducing techniques even for body acupuncture are quite dependent on the personal feeling of the practitioners.
Even you do exactly according to what is said in the text, for reducing and reinforcing, you, the practitioner yourself, do not have the real feeling, it's not that effective.

It all depends on the acupuncture physicians preference!
Majority of physicians would prefer acupressure for it's much safer and no any untoward effects.
Some physicians would give a stronger stimulation, so they would do needling instead.

Dear Tommy,
I think we should be thankful to Dr. King for his always very informative and valuable answers to our questions. As to your question about which ear should be treated, I hope too to receive Dr. King's answer on that soon. Meanwhile, just for reference, the "father" of French ear acupuncture [i:7710cf1499]P. Nogier[/i:7710cf1499] believed that in 88% of cases ear points of the right ear correspond to the right side of the body, and those of the left ear correspond to the left side of the body. The opposite is true only in 12% of cases (Nogier Р. [i:7710cf1499]Traité auriculotherapie[/i:7710cf1499]. Paris, 1969). However, [i:7710cf1499]probing[/i:7710cf1499] for sensitive spots on both ears is important. Also, you might have found another approach to deciding which ear to treat if you had followed the reference to the corresponding article of Dr. John Amaro in one of my previous posts .

As an addition to Dr. King's answers on this topic, I would quote from the chapter on Ear Acupuncture Therapy of the book [i:ee1fe05da6]Essentials of Chinese Acupuncture[/i:ee1fe05da6] (Beijing, 1980), compiled by [i:ee1fe05da6]Beijing College of TCM[/i:ee1fe05da6], [i:ee1fe05da6]Shanghai College of TCM[/i:ee1fe05da6], [i:ee1fe05da6]Nanjing College of TCM[/i:ee1fe05da6] and the [i:ee1fe05da6]Acupuncture Institute[/i:ee1fe05da6] of the [i:ee1fe05da6]Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine[/i:ee1fe05da6]. In my opinion, this is one of the best books on Chinese Acupuncture ever written for Western practitioners, the book being simple and comprehensive at the same time. (If I am not mistaken, the Medboo courses A, B, C and D are largely based on this same book).
[b:ee1fe05da6]Technique of ear acupuncture[/b:ee1fe05da6]
(1) [u:ee1fe05da6]Probing of the sensitive spot[/u:ee1fe05da6]: After points are prescribed, it is necessary to probe for the sensitive spots at the areas where the selected points are located. The commonly used methods are the following.
a. Probing for the tender spot: Probe with a blunt needle around the selected point on the auricle from the rim towards the centre. When marked tenderness is located, press hard to mark the spot for applying acupuncture.
b. Probing by electric apparatus: That is to observe the changes in electric resistance, capacity and potential at the areas of the selected auricular points with a special apparatus. The conductant points on the auricle are usually effective spots for application of stimuli in acupuncture treatment.
(2) [u:ee1fe05da6]Aseptic procedure[/u:ee1fe05da6]: Auricular points are swabbed with 75% alcohol or 2% iodine.
(3) [u:ee1fe05da6]Insertion of needle[/u:ee1fe05da6]: Stabilise the auricle with the left hand. Hold a filiform needle of 0.5 or 1 [i:ee1fe05da6]cun[/i:ee1fe05da6] with the right hand and insert it swiftly into the point avoiding penetration of the ear. There is generally a sensation of pain, but sometimes of hotness, distension, soreness or heaviness, any of which usually signify satisfactory therapeutic result.
(4) [u:ee1fe05da6]Retention of needle[/u:ee1fe05da6]: Needles are usually retained for 20-30 minutes, but in acute inflammatory cases, severe pain and paroxysmal seizures, needles are retained for 1-2 hours or even longer and intermittently manipulated to enhance stimulation.
(5) [u:ee1fe05da6]Removal of needle[/u:ee1fe05da6]: After the needle is removed, press the puncture hole with a dry, sterile cotton ball to avoid infection.
(6) [u:ee1fe05da6]Course of treatment[/u:ee1fe05da6]: Treatment is given once every day or every other day. Ten treatments make a course. The interval between courses is 5-7 days.
