What is the meaning of terms like Tai Yin, Yang Ming etc? The meridians are categorized this way and the terms are used extensively in the text but there is no explanation of what they mean. Can the terms be translated into English? And more importantly, what is the signifigance of the different categories? In other words, how is Yang Ming different from Tai Yang, and so on?

Tutor let me explain to show that i had understand the Basic TCM - Meridan and collateral parts.
The term of tai yin , yang ming just like a term of groups of all acupoints located in your body, rather than describe all the acupoints let said LU1,LU,LU3 and so on. we just named it hand tai yin and its compose of LU1,LU2,LU3 and so on...
Tai , jue and shao
tai = located on the left side when you look at your palm
jue = located on the middle side when you look at your palm
shao = located on the right side when you look at your palm
yin = located behind
yang = located in front....
the term hand tai yin means like group
when talk about hand tai yin = the meridian is located on hand and its points located same direction with your palm, and its acupoints located on the left side of your hand...

I had read in another source that the terms represented "phases" or "layers" of qi. something like Yin energy gradually transforming into Yang or something like that. It was one of those things that I seemed to understand while I was reading it but my understanding disappeared when I closed the book.
What do you mean?
I suggest you read a bit more, maybe one day you find yourself become aware of all of it.

I don't know what happened to you, but when we learn traditional Chinese medicine, we learned all these information by heart, we had to memorize all of them!
This is the very basic step in learning TCM.
That is why I wanted to take this course. It is very hard to really get anywhere by just reading books. There is a lot of material available on the subject of TCM, in fact maybe too much to learn just by reading. It is very helpful to have the discipline of having to memorize the material and pass exams. Also the exams help to narrow the focus to the most important points.
In fact phase or layer are only the term for the translation, meaning that there's a special area or layer or phase or even level in our body which is dominated by Qi.
As to the Yin and Yang transformation, I don't know how to tell in more details!
Yes, to study online courses is a bit hard, not as good as to learn face to face, but it is a bit more convenient too.

But to learn traditional Chinese medicine, we have to memorize something, otherwise you can never use it in clinic.
Nowadays, in China, many people in the circle of traditional Chinese medicine would say there's no great masters of TCM, of course there are not!
Nobody would work so hard to grasp the essence of TCM!
