Title: Syndrome differentiation of Wenbing in TCM

Syndrome differentiation of defensive qi, qi, nutrient qi and blood in TCM

General introductrion
Syndrome differentiation of defensive qi, qi, nutrient qi and blood was developed by famous doctor Yetianshi in Qing dynasty. It is a differentiation method for exogenous epidemic febrile disease. It talks about the syndrome of four stages of exogenous epidemic febrile disease, i.e. defensive phase syndrome, qi phase syndrome, nutrient phase syndrome and blood phase syndrome. In fact, it is a diseases’ transmission process. In modern science, some infectious diseases, such as influenza, mumps, and measles are related with exogenous epidemic febrile disease in TCM. so Syndrome differentiation of defensive qi, qi, nutrient qi and blood are mainly used in Wenbing in TCM, which includes some febrile diseases, infectious diseases and epidemic diseases.

1. Defensive phase syndrome
Defensive phase syndrome can be seen at the primary stage of exogenous epidemic febrile disease, it means the syndrome caused by invasion of pathogenic factors into the lung, which inducing dysfunction of lung and defensive qi.

Clinical manifestation:
Fever, slight aversion to cold and wind, reddish tongue, whitish thin or slightly yellow tongue fur, floating and rapid pulse. Accompanied by headache, dry mouth ,cough, and swelling pain of the throat.

Analysis of the symptoms:
Fever and slight aversion to cold and wind are caused by pathogenic factors attacking superficial body. The struggle between defensive qi and exogenous factors happens. Febrile pathogenic factors attacking lung induces cough, swelling pain of the throat. Febrile pathogenic factors consume body fluid, which causes slight thirst and dry mouth. Reddish tongue, whitish thin or slightly yellow tongue fur, floating and rapid pulse are all due to febrile pathogenic factors attacking superficial body.

To be continued.
