Massage and Acupuncture: Complementary and Alternative Medi

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) encompasses a group of diverse health or healing systems, practices, theories and beliefs, and products that is beyond conventional medicine.

Based from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)— a United States government agency dedicated to exploring complimentary and alternative medicine disciplines, and evidence-based studies and reporting — classified CAM into five major disciplines: it is holistic, meaning any of its discipline (e.g. traditional Chinese medicine) works on both body and mind simultaneously; it works on the premise that “what the mind can do, the body will follow”; it encourages the use of organic healing substances like herbals, foods, vitamins and other natural resources; it manipulates the body parts’ movement like the ones practiced by chiropractors; and it channels body and mental energies using tools and processes.

According to a survey conducted by NCCAM, 50% of US adults age over 18 used some form or CAM; 54.9% used CAM in conjunction with conventional medicine. With the growing number of hospice care and individuals in the US market, complementary and alternative medical treatments or therapies are sought-after.
