Syndrome differentiation of Wenbing in TCM(2)

Syndrome differentiation of defensive qi, qi, nutrient qi and blood.

2. Qi phase syndrome.
Qi phase syndrome is the second stage of exogenous epidemic febrile disease. It refers to internal excessive heat syndrome due to febrile pathogenic factors invading inside body and attacking viscera. Pathogenesis is superabundance of healthy qi and sthenia of pathogenic factors, struggling with each other strongly, and manifesting excessive symptoms. Qi phase syndrome often happens in the peak phase of the exogenous epidemic febrile disease. Defensive qi phase can develop into Qi phase if failing to treat in the qi phase gradually, it is called due transmission.

Clinical manifestation:
Fever, aversion not to cold but to heat, vexation and thirst, sweating, brown urine, reddish tongue, yellow tongue, rapid pulse. Accompanied by cough, expectoration of yellow thick sputum; or vexation, heart burning and restless; or high fever, profuse sweating, polydipsia and large pulse, or afternoon tidal fever, unpressable abdominal pain, constipation, yellow dry tongue fur, even black tongue fur with deep and sthenia pulse.

Analysis of the symptoms:
Fever, aversion not to cold but to heat, vexation and thirst, sweating, brown urine, reddish tongue, yellow tongue, rapid pulse are all caused by struggle between healthy qi and pathogenic factors. Cough expectoration of yellow thick sputum caused by accumulation of pathogenic heat in the lung, and dysfunction of lung qi. Vexations, heart burning and restless are due to disturbance of diaphragm by heat. High fever, profuse sweating, polydipsia and large pulse are due to superabundance of gastric heat. Afternoon tidal fever, unpressable abdominal pain, constipation, yellow dry tongue fur, even black tongue fur with deep and sthenia pulse are caused by retention of heat in intestine.

When the exogenous epidemic febrile disease happens into qi syndrome stage, the diseases can develop into nutrient qi phase which is severe, and nutrient qi syndrome will appear.
